Momos are a traditional Nepali cuisine also known as Dim Sum. It is believed that Momos came to India in the 1960s. People of all age groups like momos which is why they have become popular street food in India.
Momos are generally of two types veg and non-veg. They can be steamed or fried. Steamed momos are considered more healthy. Today you will learn to make steamed veg momos easily at home with fewer ingredients.
Veg momos are made with veggies only and non-veg momos can be made with chicken or beef. Let’s begin the easiest recipe to make veg momos at home:
Ingredients to Make Veg Momos at Home:
Oil – 2 tbsp (olive oil preferred) to grease momo steamer
For Momos Chutney:
Dry Red chili- 4-5
Garlic chopped- 2 tbsp
Salt- to taste
Green chili chopped- 2-3
Onion chopped- 2-3
Cabbage- 1 cup
Carrots chopped – 1 cup (can add more veggies as per your taste)
Salt – to taste
Garam Masala- 1/2 tbsp
All-purpose flour(maida)- 1 cup(140 gm)
Salt- 1/2 tbsp
Cooking oil- 1/2 tbsp
Momos Chutney Recipe:
To prepare momos chutney boil tomato, red chili, and garlic for 10-15 minutes. Blend these ingredients in a grinder jar when they become cool down. Add salt and mix well. You can add a little bit of sugar but that is optional if you want to keep it spicy.
How to Prepare Momos Filling:
For momos filling finely chop 3-4 onions and 3-4 green chilies. Chop or grate all the veggies. Turn on the stove and heat the pan. Add 2-3 spoons of olive oil. When the oil gets hot add chopped onions and green chilies. Saute for 2 to 3 minutes then add all the chopped veggies into the pan.
Mix all the ingredients well. Add salt as per taste, add garam masala and mix all the ingredients. You can add a small amount of vinegar for taste enhancement (that is completely optional). Cook them on low flame. Turn off the gas after 4-5 minutes. Your stuffing is ready. Let it cool completely.
How to Prepare Dough for Momos:
To prepare dough for momos take 1 cup of all-purpose flour(maida) in a bowl. Add 1/4 tbsp salt or as per taste. Keep adding water after small intervals. Mix them all. Do not make the dough too soft or too hard; it will be difficult to make dumplings.
Add 1/2 tbsp oil when the dough starts looking firm. By adding the oil the dough will not stick to your hands while rolling. Mix again. Let it rest for five minutes.
Divide the dough into parts by making small balls. Now roll each dough ball into a thin layer. Cut into round pieces with the help of a small bowl.
Filling Veggies into Momos:
Now with the help of a spoon, add vegetable stuffing to all the momos. Join all the edges so that filling do not come out. You can make dumplings of any shape.
How to Steam Momos:
You can use a momo steamer or momo maker to make delicious momos easily at home. Grease momo steamer pan with oil (olive oil preferred). Add 2-3 cups of water to the pot. Put all the momos in the pan and keep some space between them.
Cover the lid and let momos steam for 5-6 minutes. Your momos are ready if you see a transparent look. Turn off the gas. Serve hot veg momos with spicy momo chutney and enjoy.
