Let us talk about trends in graphic design. We start a new year and we cannot stop thinking about the evolution of graphic design over the last decades.

Undoubtedly, this discipline is increasingly valued, and we suspect that the influence of new digital environments has a lot to do where new opportunities to exploit the possibilities of creation do not cease to appear.

After a little research, we bring you a list of some of the new trends in graphic design in 2019, although some of them are not so new.

#1. The explosion of bright colors

We see an element that stands out and takes center stage in all kinds of graphic design pieces this year: color. It is true that the color has always been taken into account, but what is changing is that it now acquires more presence.

We leave behind earthy tones and pastel tones to give way to an explosion of bright colors. For its part, Pantone has already revealed its color of the year, and predicts that it will dominate 2019:

#2. Duo tone and multi-colored gradients

If in 2018 we already saw a trend towards the holographic, this year intensifies and we see degraded duo tones and multi-colored. In addition, the trend goes beyond the gradient that focuses on the background of the design.

#3. Colour Channel or color channel separation

This technique was already a trend in 2018 and does not seem to disappear at the moment. This is the separation of colour channels, whether red, green and blue in the RGB format (Red, Green, and Blue) or cyan, magenta, yellow and black in the CMYK format (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Key).

Both photographers and designers join this trend with their works to achieve great visual effects and convey strong sensations. Playing with the postures of the human figure can also achieve incredible results.

#4. Light and dark color schemes

By this, we mean that different versions of the same design are offered where light and dark colors are exchanged. This can greatly enrich the visual aspect of a brand, and even favors functionality, as in the case of Apple, Twitter or Facebook, which offer different modes of experience so that its users can adapt the screens of the buy assignment devices to the ambient light.

Thus, there are already many adherents to the dark mode of these applications, either for comfort or for pleasure. We already know, for tastes colors.

#5. Open compositions

Long ago designers used frames a lot to give a finished look to their designs, but increasingly we see how this trend is becoming obsolete to give way to freer designs and open compositions, which arouse curiosity and force the viewer to ask what there is next.

It seems that the composition continues beyond design, which can be useful to generate a cohesive visual identity in branding, something original that stands out and certainly attracts attention.

#6. 3D compositions

The 3D is still present in all areas of creative visual industry is here to stay and now we continue looking for ways to implement it in graphic design. The 3D compositions take us away from the beautiful minimalism of flat elements and show us in dystopian and futuristic environments.

#7. Illustration of photography

This technique is not new, we saw it last year, but it certainly has not gone out of style and it seems that it will continue to be one of the trends in graphic design this 2019. It is about combining photography with illustration to achieve a final composition Shocking: attractive and fun images that bring together the best of both disciplines.

#8. More elaborate handmade illustrations

Speaking of illustration … If in 2018 we saw everywhere patterns with simple and even children’s handmade illustrations, in 2019 this will change. The handmade but more dynamic and detailed illustrations are being imposed among the trends in graphic design, with a more elaborate and complex aspect.

The designs of a Mailchimp campaign last year are a clear example of the type of illustration that prevailed then in graphic design, flat designs that combined very well with a minimalist aesthetic. The same brand has chosen this year to launch a campaign with more elaborate illustrations, so it would be another clear example of this trend.

#9. Glitch effect

This effect is not new, but we will not see it disappear this year. On the contrary, we believe that it will become one of the most popular graphic design trends in 2019. Very related to the technique of separating colour channels and the destroyed effect, glitch is a visual effect that reminds us of a defective or damaged image or digital file error.

A very curious result is achieved, which perhaps has the peculiarity of evoking both the past and the future. Depending on the application, it can be the vintage or futuristic effect, underground or avant-garde.

#10. Typography as the protagonist

Before we have stressed the importance that colour is gaining in graphic design this 2019, but we do not want to put aside typography. Typography is the other great protagonist and is increasingly gaining ground in all types of designs.

In addition, virtually all the trends we have discussed are applicable to typography design. An example of this is the following composition, in which we are the protagonist of typography and where the effect of the explosion of bright and degraded colors is added.
